The school has built up a formidable reputation in chess over many years.  Twickenham Prep school teams have been the National Independent School Champions and have qualified three times for the English Schools National Finals as well as being Richmond Borough champions, on many occasions and also London champions.

Daniel King, former British champion and Chess Grandmaster coaches our pupils in his Monday Chess Club.  There is a beginners club for Year 1 and Year 2 and an older club for Year 3 - Year 8. On Tuesday evenings Twickenham Prep pupils join with some of the strongest juniors in the Borough to be coached by Richmond Chess Club leaders Peter Sawray and James Coleman. Planned sessions include this year a blindfold simultaneous display by International Master Gavin Wall. There are regular matches with other schools as well as local and national competitions.  Within school there is a strong and competitive House Chess Competition along with individual chess competitions throughout the year. Each year we send a large team to the IAPS Independent Schools Championships during the Easter holidays.

All pupils are encouraged to play regardless of ability and our coaching sessions on Tuesdays are open to all.  We also have charity chess events on a regular basis and support initiatives such as National Chess Week and the UK Land Challenge.
